The Awesome 'Dobie Badlands
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (28 October, 1999)
Average review score:

Another in a long line of wonderful booksMuriel Marshall has done it again. This prolific chronicler of Western Slope history is well known for her histories of Escalante Canyon, Grand Mesa, The Uncompahgre Plateau, and the Gunnison-Uncompahgre river region. She has a well-earned reputation for highly readable, authoritative writing that is unmatched for its clarity and scholarship. Thus, it was with great anticipation that I awaited the arrival of her latest effort, a history of the 'Dobie Badlands. The 'Dobies(locals shun the word "adobe")are found along the base of mountain ranges in such diverse areas as Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, eastern Colorado, the Dakotas and a barren looking patch stretching between Grand Junction and Delta, CO. Casual observers tend to describe the 'Dobie's as a barren, desolate, desert that is truly a "no-mans-land." Ah, but they haven't seen them through the eyes or pen of Marshall. What an eye-opening view it is! True to form, Marshall provides the reader with a wonderful description of the history of the 'Dobies which were seas, fresh water lakes and islands some 100 million years ago. She traces the evolution of the area with its diverse geology, flora, fauna and characters that are every bit as awesome as the 'Dobies themselves. While she does justice to the entire area she favors the area along the Gunnison river in Western Colorado. Here we learn that what some call a wasteland is a beautiful, haunting, mesmerizing "pure abstract art form." What do the 'Dobies look like? Well, that depends... "...like hell, if you listen to herders who have lost sheep in them, truckers who've been mired up to the axle during a thaw..." "...like heaven if you listen to photographers, artists, and rockhounds..." "...like haven to runaways. The 'Dobies are a terrible place to finad a cow or a crook..." Its all here, the stories of the men and women that tried to make a life among the unique features of the 'Dobies. The disappearance of a nine-hole golf course; the raising of peacocks; the railroads attempt to tame the terrain; and Doc Holiday's search for outlaws! The history of the 'Dobies is anything but barren or desolate after reading Marshall's exciting work. It was worth the wait to get this marvelous history of an area much misunderstood. Marshall is to be complemented on a job well done.

Good Music, but volume II is betterGet this book! The music in it is great, though not the actual 7 parts that the band plays. It has some good stuff in it (Old Joe Clark, Chopstickin') but if you want Seven Wicked Reels and Texas Swing, get Volume II.

Beothuk of Newfoundland a Vanished People
Published in Paperback by Breakwater Books Ltd (December, 1989)
Average review score:

Interesting OverviewThis was a very good book. It focuses more on the life of the Beothuk people rather than the history of their interaction with the European Settlers of Newfoundland, although that sad part of history is also represented. The artwork was quite well done. The book is more of an overview than an extremely detailed account. I was able to get a good picture of just how well the Beothuk had adapted to and prospered in a hostile environment. The tragic story of their extinction is presented from a neutral point of view.

Beyond the Killing Fields
Published in Hardcover by Aperture (July, 1992)
Average review score:

Photographic record of life in Site 2.A collection of black-and-white photographs depicting life in miserable camps of Cambodian displaced persons strung along the Thai border. The photographs are interwoven with touching personal stories. These are not beautiful images, but then nothing in the camps was ever beautiful to my eyes. Those Cambodian-Americans who were interned in the camps and those who worked with humanitarian agencies involved in programs along the Thai-Cambodian border will want to own this book. Forwards are by the Dalai Lama and Dith Pran. The reader cannot help but wonder what "repatriated" Cambodians who once resided in the camps would have to say today. Was that chaotic mass repatriation back to troubled Cambodia truly a United Nations success story, or was one misery simply exchanged for another, with the victims conveniently moved out of sight, or is the truth somewhere in between? Kari Rene Hall's fine work cries out for a sequel and follow-up research work inside Cambodia, where things have never been easily understood even by those most intimately involved.

The Boat Contest: Featuring Aesop's the Lion and the Mouse (Lamb Chop's Fables)
Published in Hardcover by Time Life (August, 1999)
Average review score:

Soooo goodThis is a wonderful story, which teaches little people how important their input and help can be. It even includes, in the middle, an Aesop fable.
I usually shy away from TV-inspired stories - this one is about Lamb Chop and Charlie Horse. However, a few years ago, I happened to be present when my husband read this story to a group of preschoolers (our daughter included). I saw the children's reaction: eyes glued to the ``front of the class", every child engrossed in the story, enchanted, and empowered with pride.

Extract from ¿Books on Bosnia¿, London 1999An important documentary source-book, with full transcripts of the 1993 hearings which led to the International Court making a provisional court order demanding that the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia 'take all measures... to prevent commission of the crime of genocide' by forces it supported in Bosnia.
